Peggy Hughes Ceramic Tile Artist
A chance meeting which became her passion changed Peggy's life. Her career as a special education teacher spanned twenty six years while her art was a hobby. At the age of 42, Peggy went back to her studies and loved art history. To complete her degree, she was required to study an unrelated medium and was introduced to ceramics. She fell in love with the smell, the temperature, and the malleability of the medium. Initially a hand builder, she would roll out, cut, and connect slabs of clay to create art pieces or small sculptures. Her experience in ceramic kiln building and ceramic chemistry was valuable. Later, as hand building became physically challenging, she focused on tile building. She would create individual tiles for custom work for clients in Naples. Peggy made her own tiles and carved reliefs into them and then glazed them. Ready made tiles became the canvas she paints on. She applies glazes over the underglazes to enrich color or create transparency. Sometimes special effect glazes are used to create textures. Each color must be applied 3 x, dried and fired. Her completed pieces are collections of framed tiles or just individual ones. Peggy lives in Citrus Springs and is inspired by nature, space and abstract art. She loves to read, especially science fiction, and native plant gardening. Her other passion is sharing her time with canine rescues and she enjoys her two fur babies, Peanut and Maxwell Smart.
