From left, Fausto Jarquin and Gloria Altamirano, who are the parents of art scholarship winner Joel Jarquin; Nate Davila, who is the partner of art scholarship winner Bethany "Joy" Evans; Erin Sorensen, who is the education director of Rainbow Springs Art in Dunnellon gallery; and Bridget Hanley, president of the gallery.
Two recent area high school students are about to launch their dreams to study art-related subjects in college, helped by scholarships from Rainbow Springs Art in Dunnellon gallery.
Joel Jarquin of Belleview High School and Bethany ”Joy” Evans of Lecanto High School each received a $1,000 scholarship from the gallery to pursue their artistic goals.
The gallery raises the money from such events as its annual art festival in the spring and other happenings.
Joel is the son of Gloria Altamirano and Fausto Jarquin of Belleview and plans to attend the Art Institute of Chicago, where he will study studio art, digital art, and graphic design.
Joy is the daughter of Beth Evans of Inverness and Tony Evans of Ocala. She plans to study three-dimensional art and theater scene design at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga.
Joel is vice president of the Spanish Club, a member of National Honor Society, and chemistry club. Joy is president of chorus and a member of National Honor Society.
Joel said art to him is a way to express oneself in a universal language that everyone can understand. Joy said through art, she is able to express what’s inside her head that she can’t verbally express.
They both encourage high school seniors to apply for scholarships.
Joel recommends, “Definitely start early. Look into local scholarships and try to fit a niche.”
Joy said, “Apply even if you don’t think you’ll get it because you might surprise yourself.”
