08/29: Granny Tales: words of Wisdom from Our Elders
Writer, researcher, actress, dancer and professor emerita Joanne Kilgour Dowdy on Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. reads from her collection of stories, "Granny Tales: Words of Wisdom From the Elders," at Rainbow Springs Art in Dunnellon gallery.
Her book is based on sayings that Kilgour Dowdy heard from her grandmother and elders while she was growing up in Trinidad. She not only will share the sayings but will invite the
audience to share their ancestors sayings. As she explains, "I do not do TALKS. I engage people in conversations about the
expressions, the sayings, that they grew up hearing and learning and now use in their daily interactions."
Kilgour Dowdy is the author of 16 books and a professor emerita from Kent State University in Ohio. She is a graduate of the Julliard School, Theater Center, in New York City. She was a professor of Adolescent/Adult Literacy at Kent State and has published about women and literacy, drama in education, and other topics. Her book, "Ph.D. Stories: Conversations With
My Sisters," a collection of interviews with tenured African American female professors, won a research award.
But Kilgour Dowdy also has performed a one-woman, autobiographical show, "Between Me and the Lord." And her first children's book, "Olympic Hero: Lennox Kilgour Story," is
about the first weightlifter in his division to win an Olympic medal for Trinidad and Tobago. He is Kilgour Dowdy's father.
The reading and conversation will be at Rainbow Springs Art in Dunnellon gallery, 20826 Walnut St. Tickets are $15 and available at www.rainbowspringsart.com or at the gallery. For information, call 352-763-4048.
