Martha Pelot

Fine Arts Painter - Mixed Media

Hello!

Welcome to my art page!

My interest in art started when I was very young. My mother was into arts so she would teach me stuff. Around age twelve I would draw my own dolls, using color pencils.

I took quite a few art classes while in high school. Basketry was a skill I acquired independently, so for the “make your own class” in college I composed a Basketry 101 course.

Around age 15 my parents let me pick a good boarding school in NY.
My choice was The Masters  Schools, a private boarding school in Dobbs Ferry, NY along the East bank of the Hudson River somewhat close to New York City.
It meant moving from rural North Carolina, by myself, up to New York. At that age it was quite exciting and a bit overwhelming! It was good to have friends to go into the City because I was very naïve.

Mermaids Dance and Sing

Sometimes we snuck out and went to the City at night, by train... back next day in the morning.
We enjoyed the nightlife in the City and, fortunately, nothing bad ever happened to us.

We had things I did together, like I was part of a dance club, so we enjoyed seeing a theater troupe called Alvin Ailey perform, blending their modern dance rhythms with works inspired by jazz legends like Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.

After I left the school I came home to do my interneship as part of my 12th grade choice. My main project was a presentation on a Gallery called Secca Contemporary Arts. That's where I really got motivated to learn more about Arts.

Mermaids Play and Plan

It was only after getting married that I started studying for my Major in Arts, after which I pursued a Master’s program at the NC-UNCG where my husband was enlisted in their creative writing program.

There the course that impressed the most was the textile arts in the fiber arts area.

Save the Best for Last

In the late 90's we moved to Florida and that's when I picked up the brush - - -

We visited the Dali exhibits: I loved his work, it is so unique, powerful, very playful. I mean, what are you thinking when you have clocks melting over a tree?
- maybe the line of time, how it plays on things, warps what it touches?

Mermaid Tales

How did I get into Mermaids?
There was a woman who owned a shop in Punta Gorda, FL where she mostly sold mermaid themed art. She got very sick with cancer.

One day I went into her shop and people just cleared out and left us alone for a while. I was teaching yoga, not painting.

It was a special moment, a unique experience to meet someone in such distress who would  open up and asked for my advice. Others had talked about how she could deal with her sickness.  I also gave her suggestions to keep a positive outlook, mentioning visualization, focusing on an area that is not working in your body and send positive energy to that area then imagining you are shooting the cancer out of your body. For a brief minute we were connected like one. It was an intense connection, she was like a sister, just that one meeting.

She later died; her absence is still hard. I just felt like I should pick up where she left off. She was probably in her forties… I got one of her pieces for myself. I kept a nice image of her in my heart.
