Kathryn Farnworth

I am a painted paper collage artist. I create my collages first by painting a variety of papers, using several techniques and media. I then cut these papers and place them on an underlayer until I am pleased with the placement.
This requires a lot of recutting and replacing before I am happy with the results. I then glue the pieces down from back to front, layering, switching, and trying again, until the piece feels finished. Painted paper collage gives an entirely different look than I could get by painting the scene directly. I love the interaction I have with the papers as I paint, cut, and place the puzzle pieces.
I also use prints of my original mixed media papers as a foundation upon which to build more layers and textures. Materials collected from other sources are also a great resource, although these are rarely used by themselves but are used as another medium on my original papers.
These mixed media papers become my paint, and my scissors and glue become my paintbrush as I piece together a “painting” filled with texture, color, and a unique style that cannot be achieved by paint alone.
Although my subject matter varies, I usually create scenes familiar and special to me. This may be a re-creation of a favorite vacation spot, or I may try to invoke a feeling that I get from an experience or memory.
Once I have painted my papers, I photograph them and edit them for use in my “Collage by Number” kits. These kits simplify the complexity of creating art. These kits are colorful, eye catching, and rich in detail. The simplicity of the shapes allows the paper to shine, giving the collage depth and professionalism. The projects also are manageable for individuals who are less comfortable with their artistic abilities.
Customers choose where on the paper to place each pattern piece, allowing for creative freedom and individuality. Included in these kits are patterns, prints of my original art papers, instructions, and a substrate on which to create one’s masterpiece. The customer only needs to supply a glue stick, a black pen, and scissors.
